A Thermador refrigerator that beeps is usually giving you one of two alarms: the door alarm, which sounds when the door has been open for a long time, or the temperature alarm, which sounds when the freezer is too warm. For the door alarm, close the door. For the temperature alarm, fix the cause, then acknowledge the alarm on the control.

This guide explains what each alarm means, how to silence it, how to change the alarm sound on models that allow it, and when to call. It is based on Thermador’s owner’s manuals, which differ by model, so keep yours handy.

Match the Beep to the Alarm

What you notice Alarm Safe first step
Continuous tone, and the door is open or not fully closed Door alarm Close the door fully. On some models you can also press ALARM OFF
Tone with a flashing temperature display or ALARM OFF light Temperature alarm Find the cause, then press ALARM OFF or the confirm button as your manual describes
Alarm after the refrigerator was just switched on or after a power outage Temperature alarm Allow time to cool, then check that the set temperature is reached. See our error codes and reset guide
Alarm after you loaded a lot of fresh food Temperature alarm The manual lists this as a common cause. Let the freezer recover and acknowledge the alarm
Beeping that comes back after the steps above Possible fault See When to Call a Technician below

The Door Alarm

Thermador’s manuals describe the door alarm as a warning that sounds when the door has been open for a long time. The manuals do not give a number of minutes, so do not rely on a fixed delay.

  • To stop it: close the door. The T36FT guide also lets you press ALARM OFF, which flashes while the alarm sounds.
  • To turn the tone off or on: some models, such as the T36FT, have a door alarm tone setting in the menu. Other models do not.
  • Under-counter and wine models: Thermador’s support page names an Alarm control on these models but does not explain what it does. Check your owner’s manual.

The Temperature Alarm

The temperature alarm means the freezer has become too warm. The T36FT guide lists these common causes:

  • The appliance was just switched on.
  • A large amount of fresh food was added.
  • The freezer door was open too long.

To clear it:

  1. Check that the cause has been fixed. Close the door and give the appliance time.
  2. Acknowledge the alarm. Press ALARM OFF, or the confirm button on models such as the T30BB915SS. The tone stops. On the T36FT, the display briefly shows the warmest temperature reached.
  3. Check after several hours that the set temperature has been reached again. The T36FT guide also says to clear anything blocking the external ventilation openings.

Food safety: Thermador’s manual warns that bacteria may develop during thawing and spoil frozen items. Follow your manual and use your own judgment about any food that may have thawed.

Change or Silence the Alarm Sound

Option Where it applies
Signal tone volume: Settings, then Appliance settings, then Signal tone volume T36IT902NP bottom-freezer built-in, per its instructions for use
Door alarm tone on or off: MENU, then ALARM OFF T36FT, per its use and care guide
Sabbath mode turns off the alarm and other audible signals T36FT and T36IT902NP. If your refrigerator is silent when you expect an alarm, check whether it is on

The T36FT and T36IT902NP are the models whose guides we reviewed. Other models may differ, so check the owner’s manual for your model number.

When to Call a Technician

Call when:

  • The alarm keeps sounding after you have closed the door, fixed the cause and acknowledged it.
  • The temperature alarm returns after the freezer has had several hours to recover.
  • The freezer does not reach its set temperature again.
  • The refrigerator shows an error code or other symptoms along with the alarm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Thermador refrigerator beeping?

Thermador’s owner’s manuals describe two alarms: a door alarm, which sounds when the door has been open for a long time, and a temperature alarm, which sounds when the freezer gets too warm. Close the door first. If it keeps sounding, follow the temperature alarm steps in this guide.

Why does my Thermador refrigerator beep when the door is closed?

Make sure the door is fully closed and nothing is holding it open, such as a drawer or food. If the alarm is the temperature alarm, closing the door will not stop it. Fix the cause, then acknowledge the alarm on the control as your manual describes. If it keeps returning, call for service.

How do I turn off the Thermador door alarm?

Close the door. On models like the T36FT guide, you can also press ALARM OFF. Some models let you turn the door alarm tone on or off in the menu. Steps vary by model, so check your owner’s manual.

What does the Thermador temperature alarm mean?

It means the freezer has become too warm. Thermador’s manual lists common causes: the appliance was just switched on, a large amount of fresh food was added, or the freezer door was open too long. Fix the cause, acknowledge the alarm, and check after several hours that the set temperature has been reached again.

Can I change the alarm volume on my Thermador refrigerator?

On some models, yes. The T36IT902NP guide has a Signal tone volume setting under Settings, then Appliance settings. Other models have an on/off setting for the door alarm tone instead. Check your owner’s manual for your model.

Is the beeping a sign something is broken?

Not by itself. An alarm is the refrigerator telling you about the door or the freezer temperature. If it keeps sounding after you have closed the door, fixed the cause and acknowledged it, that is when to call for a technician.
